Preheat oven to 400°F.
Butter a 9 x 12 casserole dish.
Combine salt and spices in a small bowl. Mix.
Layer half of the potaoes in the dish. Sprinkle half of the salt mixture over potatoes. Pour half of the cream over potatoes. Layer remaining potatoes on top. Sprinkle remaining salt mixture over potatoes. Pour remaining cream over all. Sprinkle cheese on top.
Cover with parchment paper and foil. Bake covered for 30 minutes. Remove from oven, uncover, press potatoes down into liquid and return to oven, uncovered. Bake an additional 15 minutes, until potatoes are tender and cheese is browned.
